Chlamydia is the most frequently reported bacterial STD (sexually transmitted disease) in the United States. It is caused by bacteria called Chlamydia trachomatis and is transmitted during oral, vaginal, or anal sex. The infection can also be passed from a mother to her baby during childbirth. Common symptoms of chlamydia include painful urination and abnormal discharge from the vagina or penis. Immediate treatment (which consists of antibiotics) is necessary in order to prevent serious reproductive problems in the future.
